My mum was diagnosed with melanoma at just 30 years old. Since then, she has endured two further melanomas and countless other skin cancers. At the time, I was just a baby, learning to toddle around on chubby little legs and blissfully unaware of the havoc melanoma was wreaking on my mum’s body.
From that moment on, sun safety became a non-negotiable in our family. My mum made sure we understood the dangers of the sun and that we never stepped outside without protection. We were lathered in sunscreen daily and covered in long sleeves, oversized hats, or usually both, especially whenever we spent extended time outdoors.
Years later, when I became a mum myself, I experienced those challenges first-hand while trying to protect my own children from the sun.
Applying sunscreen to a squirming, uncooperative, sensory sensitive toddler often felt impossible. It regularly ended in frustration, tears, and both of us covered head to toe in greasy residue. I needed a “mum hack”, and fast, but nothing available truly solved the problem. Frustrated, I decided to find my own solution.
